Extension of the Punakha Hospital (phase II),
based on the agreement signed in April 1999, with the turn key construction in adap ted Bhutanese architecture and designed by Fritz Baumgartner and Dr. Martin Joos, of a separate Policlinic,
a second ward with 20 beds, a building for maintenance and storage, a small building for the religious rites for deceased. The construction started in June 2001, the inauguration by the former
Minister of Health Lyonpo Sangay Ngedup and the then Minister of Health Dr. Jigme Singay was effected in December 2003.
The costs for this project amounted to 316.000 EURO. Dr. Martin Joos was
succeeded by Dr. Johannes Meixner in 2001 untill mid 2005 who is also co-financed by CIM and “Pro Bhutan ”. The Bhutanese District Medical Officer in Punakha and Dr. Meixner, by
integrating phase I and phase II, have restructured the whole hospital. Accordingly, the Bhutanese Health Ministry now has increased the numbers of doctors and staff seconded to the Punakha
hospital which now responds better to the growing demand of the public.
The German NGO „Doctors for the 3. World“, Frankfurt, has added considerable financial support, with public funds, to the first 3 projects.
